People with diabetes are highly susceptible to tooth and gum disease.
Studies show that children and adults who are insulin-dependent have much greater
prevalence of gum loss and general periodontal (gum) breakdown than those without the
disease.
Good oral hygiene habits are a must for people with
diabetes. Brush teeth at least twice daily with a soft brush holding it at a 45 degree
angle to reach the gum crevices. Always remember to brush your tongue every time you brush
your teeth. Flossing in between and along the sides of each tooth is just as important as
brushing.
Warning signs of periodontal problems include one or more loose teeth, bleeding gums, gum
recession, spaces between the teeth never noticed before, and any swelling in the gum area.
If any of these symptoms exist, promptly see your dentist and make certain the dentist is aware of
the potential complications of diabetes.
